Alice was recently left by her husband. Ursula’s husband died after a violent crime. And Gareth is a washed out, wannabe police officer working as a security officer in a mall. Ursula, Gareth and Alice don’t know each other — or only on the most superficial basis — when their lives intersect during a horrible crime. Which sounds really exciting and suspenseful, but, unfortunately, it’s not enough to really make this book into a great … Read More “Strangers by C.L. Taylor” »

I figured out the whodunit part very early on, but for once it didn’t lessen my enjoyment of the story, and I stayed hooked from start to finish. Holly was kidnapped when she was 4-years-old and was unexpectedly returned three months later, physically unharmed but for a scar on her arm. The person who kidnapped her was never caught, but now, more than two decades later, another girl is taken. Holly’s mother Cecily might have … Read More “The Day I Disappeared by Brandi Reeds” »
Woman on the Edge was a fun (albeit dark,) couldn’t-put-it-down, suspense novel. Morgan, who has … Read More “Woman on the Edge by Samantha M. Bailey” »

The later stories were somewhat better, and I wish they would have been moved toward the beginning of the book to encourage interest in reading to the end, but I eventually made it all the way through. Perhaps these stories struggle because of modern television detective shows–which I might be slightly addicted to–which always … Read More “The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes: A Collection of Victorian-Era Detective Stories by G. This book is told from the perspectives of three women: Sarah, Connie, and Anna. Sarah is a London restaurant owner who leaves her husband (after the police start questioning her about his business practices) and returns to her family home to spend more time with her father. She ends up buying an old house to restore, which used to belong to Connie. Connie is the daughter of the former overseer of the old orphanage and … Read More “The Orphan House by Ann Bennett” »
