This debut suspense/thriller novel has so many twists and turns, it’s hard to figure out what’s coming next, let alone what the final twist will be. Overall, it was a fun read and did a great job in not following the cookie cutter outline of so many thrillers out there right now.
Lucy King takes her dog along with a few important possessions and flees from her abusive boyfriend in Brooklyn to a small cabin in Woodstock, New York. She is quickly befriended by her next door neighbors, Vera and John, a seemingly nice couple who have their own troubles and need to disappear. Lucy offers to help John fake his own death, but when he actually turns up dead, Lucy no longer knows who she can trust.
I really like how the author draws the reader into the stories of each character and slowly reveals more and more of their secrets as the book goes on. Even when I thought I had figured out a piece of the puzzle, I’d only be right for a few pages or chapters and then there would be another twist that changed everything. And even better, most of the twists (although not all) were actually believable.
Lucy’s character development as the protagonist was also really interesting. I often pitied her and was frustrated by her at the same time. But it was interesting, as the story went on, to understand why she made the choices she made. I definitely recommend this one for those who enjoy this genre.
