Three years ago, teenage sisters Emma and Cass go missing, with very little for investigators to go on to find them. Now, Cass has returned–alone–and the investigators are anxious to get her help to find her sister. Dr. Abby Winters, a psychologist who was part of the initial investigation, is still sure the girls’ mother is responsible for their disappearance. Abby’s professional research was always focused on children of narcissist mothers, and she sees too many red flags in the girls’ family situation to just ignore it, no matter what the other investigators believe.
I enjoyed this book, and even though I knew there were going to be several twists, for once I didn’t guess all of them by the end of the first half of the book. While I didn’t especially love any of the characters (which I don’t necessarily think is a requirement for a book to be good,) I thought this was actually effective here to demonstrate the specific psychology behind these characters. And while I don’t know how realistic a lot of the outcome really is, I still appreciate the steps the author took to get there.
