I’m having fun reading through some backlist titles, and this was a good, quick read.
Amber Patterson is jealous of the other women she sees around her, dripping with wealth and not deserving of what they have, especially her target Daphne Parrish. Daphne spends her days between the gym, spending time with her two daughters, and planning elaborate fundraisers for cystic fibrosis with her friends, while her husband, Jackson, is a handsome real estate tycoon. Amber sees a way in with Daphne and becomes her best friend, all while planning on getting Jackson to fall in love with her and betray Daphne. But Amber has her own secrets from her past, and they are about to make everything more complicated.
This book definitely has a slow build, and it’s not until you get to the half told from the perspective of Daphne that it really picks up the pace and gets good. Amber is creepy, but she starts that way and ends that way, and there’s nothing really redeeming about her. Even as she finds herself starting to actually like Daphne, she doesn’t back down, even as she’s given more opportunities to just be a decent person. I also didn’t like Jackson from the beginning… he was too used to getting his own way with everything, too smooth, too charming.
Overall, I’m glad I read this one, but the twists were a bit too obvious.
