If you’ve ever seen the movie Sliding Doors, then you already have an idea of how this book will play out, just with a criminal defense attorney as the main character. I really wanted to like this one more than I actually did.
Lila Bennett, a wildly successful criminal defense attorney, has a husband who has been depressed for years, a best friend who doesn’t know Lila is sleeping with her husband Sam, and a mother who ruined her childhood hero for her. One evening, though, she has a choice to make — continue her affair with Sam or go home to her husband. In the first scenario, she is kidnapped and in the other scenario she is being stalked but escapes the kidnapping.
The suspense was fine… The red herrings were fine… The whodunnit was fine… Lila herself was fine, but kind of lacking in personality. I didn’t love how there was crossover between the dual stories, making it seem like Lila was experiencing parts of both of them at the same time. I think it was supposed to be clever, but I found it distracting when it kept coming up. And the ending was somewhat disappointing, especially for the non-kidnapping storyline. Maybe because I just didn’t care anymore at that point.
Perhaps if you’ve never seen Sliding Doors, this would be a lot more enjoyable and suspenseful, and then I’d recommend it. If you have seen the movie, though, you don’t really need to spend time on this one.
