I’m just going to say it up here: Keep reading all the way to the end. That’s what makes the whole book. Seriously, keep reading. Iris and Summer are identical twins on the outside, but inside — where it counts — they are actually mirror images of each other, both in the placement of their organs and in who they are. One is the “perfect” twin, while the other is severely flawed. When Summer needs … Read More “The Girl in the Mirror by Rose Carlyle” »

I really wanted to like this one a lot more than I did. I loved the premise, but unfortunately, for me, it just didn’t live up to the promise. Two weeks before the wedding, Amy’s fiancé Matt doesn’t return home after a dinner with a client. She calls the police to report him missing, but there is no sign of him. I’m usually late to the party on thriller series, so it was nice starting a series from the beginning right when it’s being published. While I figured out the responsible party as soon as this character was introduced, it was still a suspenseful crime thriller, which answered the main whodunit for this book but left you hanging for the bigger crime. Hazel Gaynor has written another wonderful historical fiction novel that will leave you both content and in tears. Set in China during WWII, a British-run missionary school, filled with British and American students and teachers, is taken over by the Japanese army. Different chapters are told from the perspective of different characters, but the main character is Nancy Plummer (aka “Plum”) who is 10-years-old and has been left at the school by her missionary parents … Read More “When We Were Young & Brave by Hazel Gaynor” »
Overall, this was the perfect book for the beginning of autumn. The writing style reminded me of a fairy tale, and I just wanted to curl up under a warm blanket with some apple cider and enjoy it uninterrupted. Alice Hoffman’s latest addition to the Practical Magic series takes us back to the years of the Salem Witchcraft Trials, and we learn about Maria Owens — her childhood, her first love, her daughter — and … Read More “Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman” »
